According to the NHS around 4000 deaths per year are caused by asbestos related lung cancer, making it the UK's biggest industrial disease killer.
If you have lost a loved to cancer because of exposure to a dangerous substance call 0800 633 5730 for legal advice.
At present the HSE is running a campaign called Asbestos: The Hidden Killer because in spite of the substance being banned from use and strict rules being in place related to its removal and destruction when found, workers are still dying from exposure to this highly dangerous substance. Many of these deaths are of tradespeople such as builders, plasterers and electricians.
The campaign has been created to highlight that fact that many tradesmen believe their risk of exposure and likelihood of developing an asbestos related disease is low because it has been banned for many years.
However workers need to be aware that the risk remains as the substance is likely to be found in any building which was constructed or renovated prior to the year 2000.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring burn resistant material which was used extensively in the 1950s in the building industry for fireproofing in everything from pipe lagging to textured plaster.
Sadly the substance, which was meant to protect people has in fact led to the death of thousands of people who have died from related cancers, and it can be found everywhere from schools and hospitals to people's homes.
Workers are at risk when renovating a building containing asbestos, as when fibres are disturbed by cutting or drilling they can easily be inhaled as dust.
Builders renovating houses are at risk and should take measures to reduce their potential exposure to the deadly substance.
Sadly there is no cure for asbestos-related cancers such as mesothelioma, however early detection and treatment by radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery can improve symptoms and prolong life.
If you have been exposed to asbestos and have developed a related cancer you are entitled to claim compensation from your employer if a link between your job and the illness can be found.
