Working out a hearing loss claim value.

When calculating hearing loss compensation, both the circumstances of the injury and the severity of the hearing damage are taken into account.

The more severe the damage the higher the compensation awarded.

While each case is unique there are precedents set which can be used as a general guide to how much you can claim.

  • Occasional hearing loss or tinnitus – up to £7,000.
  • Moderate hearing loss or tinnitus – up to £15,000.
  • Severe hearing loss or tinnitus – up to £29,000.
  • Complete hearing loss in one ear – up to £29,000.
  • Complete hearing loss in both ears – up to £70,000.

Tinnitus claims.

To find out how much compensation you could be entitled to call 0800 633 5730.

There are up to 250,000 workers suffering some form of work related hearing loss in the UK, with the most common form being tinnitus.

The severity of the symptoms can vary widely in seriousness from a quiet buzzing to a constant drone, in the most severe cases hearing can be lost completely.

If your hearing was damaged at work and your employer failed to provide safety equipment or notify you of the risk, you are entitled to make a claim against them.

Your hearing may have been lost gradually over a long period, and as soon as you become aware of any symptoms you should seek immediate medical advice. There are time limits to making a claim, for more advice call 0800 633 5730.

Acoustic shock claims.

Not all hearing loss occurs over a prolonged period. Cases of sudden loss have become more common since the creation of call centres. A sudden loud high pitched noise directly into the ear can lead to permanent damage such as a perforated eardrum.

The cause of call centre worker hearing damage is often the use of poor quality audio equipment. If you have been supplied with a headset without noise limiting features by your employer and your hearing has been damaged find out about making a claim.

Claim case - Metal worker receives £10,000 in compensation.

Mr W worked in a factory for 10 years using machinery to cut metal into small pieces.

He worked in close proximity to the machinery and each time the machine came into contact with the metal it would make a loud screeching noise.

He was not supplied with safety equipment by his employer, and after prolonged exposure he developed tinnitus and hearing loss. A claim was made against his employer and compensation of £10,000 was awarded.

Claiming compensation from your employer.

By law all employers must have Employers’ Liability Insurance to pay compensation to workers injured at work.  This insurance means that you can feel safe claiming compensation without the risk you could lose your job or your employer could go bust.

If you work in a noisy environment your employer has a legal duty to provide you with equipment to protect your hearing. If you have developed hearing loss because of your job, contact our hearing loss team led by Philip Jackson for advice.
