The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB).

The MIB is a non-profit making company, was set up by UK motor insurers to compensate victims of either untraced or uninsured drivers.

Drivers injured in an accident where the party at fault has no insurance or cannot be traced, are entitled to make a claim against this scheme.

Injured police motorcyclist receives a six figure payout from the Untraced Drivers Scheme

If you have been injured in a road accident, and the driver who caused the accident did not stop and cannot be traced, you may still be able to claim compensation.

Under the Motor Insurers Untraced Drivers Scheme you could be entitled to a payout for your pain, suffering and loss of earnings.

Claim case example:

An on duty policewoman who fell from her motorbike when she lost control after hitting debris in the road, has been awarded a £455,000 payout.

The policewoman was severely injured in an accident, which was caused by a car collision in which the driver involved did not stop and could not be traced.

She sustained a complex fracture of the right patella which required a total of eight operations. She has been advised that she will require a total knee replacement within 20 years and due to her young age (34) this may need to be repeated later in life.

The impact of the accident on her life has been significant, her mobility has been significantly impaired and she now requires daily pain relief medication.

She was retired from the police force as a new suitable role could not be found to accommodate her reduced physical capacity. While she has now found alternative employment it is not within the police.

As the driver who caused her accident could not be traced a claim could not be pursued against an insurance company. However in spite of this a claim was still made to the Motor Insurers Untraced Drivers Scheme.

After reviewing her case it was decided the former policewoman was the victim of a negligent driver and eligible for a compensation.

Compensation award

Using medical evidence to support her claim that she will most likely two knee replacements during her lifetime, and the fact she has lost her career with the police, a £455,000 settlement was agreed.
