A Hull Hospital patient has been awarded a significant payout after a routine operation left her needing a colostomy bag.
A 45 year old nurse and mother of two has secured a 6 figure payout after a surgical error left her with bowel damage.
Mrs A was diagnosed with ovarian cysts which required a routine operation to remove them.
Initially she believed the operation had gone well, but within a couple of days became ill. A medical examination revealed that her bowel had been damaged during the operation, she was referred for an immediate colostomy operation which saved her life.

Under normal circumstance a colostomy operation is reversible after 3 to 6 months but in the case of Mrs A this was not possible as her wound had become infected.
She had to undergo a second colostomy operation after which she developed rheumatoid arthritis. Unfortunately developing this illness meant she could no longer have surgery to reverse her colostomy.
A routine operation which should have led to a short stay in hospital turned into a far more major procedure and a 2 month stay in hospital. In addition to having an extended stay in hospital Mrs A also had to take a year off work, and due to the onset rheumatoid arthritis she is now unable to return to a job she loved.
Mrs A has suffered greatly since her operation and has had to come to terms with significant changes to her life caused by the hospital blunder.
Having suffered significant pain, distress, loss of earnings and a level of disability she decided to make a claim for compensation.
The Princess Royal Hospital in Hull where she was initially treated admitted liability for her injuries, and after the matter had been listed in court agreed a £200,000 settlement.
